sumi-e (black and white)
- 6-VA-CE-2.3 Create a drawing, using varying tints, shades, and intensities.
1) How does this project relate to the standard?
The project relates to the standard because for this project, we had to create a replica of an Asian (Japanese) art using only shades of black and white. We had to use the value scale to darken and emphasize the parts we wanted to be more visible and highlight the sections we wanted less-visible. We used the solution with lighter ink first to create an outline and used the darker ink solution to go back and darken the parts we wanted and add shadow to our paintings. We also used different types of brush strokes to add texture and more value.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
In order to do well on this assignment, I first had to sketch an outline of the painting. I made sure to have all the requirements which was an animal and a landscape. Next, I took the solution, with only a little bit of ink, and created an outline of the painting. I tried using different styles of brush strokes to create texture. After I finished the outlines with the light solution, I went back and added value to my painting. I added shadow and darkened the parts that were supposed to be darker. I painted the animal of a Panda first and then drew the mountains in the background. For my finishing touches, I flattened my paintbrush and used the dry end of it to create the allusion of clouds and wind in movement.
3) This project demonstrates my strengths/mastery of...
The assignment demonstrates the strength of being able to re-create an artwork from a different era and a different place. It shows how well we can learn and adapt to a certain culture that's different from ours. We learned that that artists in Asian cultures often paint pictures that represent landscapes and things that have to do with nature. It also demonstrates the strength of being able to create the allusion of texture and movement by just changing the brushstrokes. The assignment also demonstrates the strength of being creative and artistic. The requirements for this project were very minimal. The rest of the project was left up to our imagination.
4) I could have improved/further developed my work by…
I could have improved my work on this assignment by better managing my time. We were given a limited amount of time to complete the painting. If I had took account of my time,I would have been able to complete it without having to rush. I could have also improved my work on this assignment by creating a nicer background and making my painting look more realistic. I could have also added more shadow and different values to my painting to make it look nicer.
.5) How will you apply the skills learned from this assignment for real world applications in the near future?
I will apply the skill of creativity in all my classes when doing projects and activities. I will also use it in every-day life because without creativity, life would be boring and would not be unique. I will use the skill of painting landscapes in future art classes and also when I am doing projects. I will use the skill of being able to adapt to a different culture and replicate the countries customs through artwork if I decide to travel or if I decide to take pictures. Both pictures and paintings can represent the areas customs and with this assignment, I learned that every country has their own ways of artwork. By deciding that I want to be in the major of engineering design. I can apply the skill of art techniques from all over the world and maximize my views on art values.
