Recognizing advocacy in history
Elie Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928. He was born in Sighet, which is now known as Sighetu Marmației. He was a professor and political activist before he became the author of 57 books. He was given the Noble Peace Prize in 1986. He was the only son from a family of 4 with 3 sisters. Wiesel was very educated because of his parents. His father, Shlomo, encouraged him to learn Hebrew and stressed humanism. His mother encouraged him to study the Torah. Elie Wiesel was put into the ghettos twice. When he was put into the concentration camps,at age 15, he was separated from his sisters and put into a camp with his father. The concentration camp he and his father went to was Auschwitz.
After the war, he became a professional journalist. Wiesel chose not to write about his experience at the concentration camp for 10 years, but his close friend eventually persuaded him to write about his experiences. He wrote his first book And the World Remained Silent and more. His book told people what he felt during his life and his experience. He wrote how miserable his experience was at Auschwitz and during World War 2. He inspired many people such as Oprah Winfrey. People were so inspired that people wanted to make a movie based on Elie Wiesel’s book, but he refused saying it would lose its meaning. He wanted people to know how the people felt when they were captive. He wrote his books hoping that people would read and not have to go through what he went through.
His effort to show people what he went through and what he felt is very great, in my opinion. He didn’t want people to go through what he went through. I can apply it to my own life because his passion and effort for wanting to not create the same situation. I can also apply his effort to my daily life because advocates like him inspire people and make sure no one is treated like he was. His efforts to inspire people and tell people about his experience stop people from hurting others and giving the same pain he once received.
