community service
For the eighth grade students, we were given a task of completing 20 hours of community service. The place where I decided to attended and do community service was Pet Smart. While looking for a place to do community service, I was introduced to the cat adoption center by my friend. They would bring in cats every Saturday and set up a place where people could come and look at cats. With the money they earned with the cats, they would buy more cats from shelters. Like most people already know, shelters treat animals very badly and if they are not taken with a couple of weeks, they are killed. Because of this organization, many cats were saved and were able to find new safe homes.
At pet smart, I was in charge of setting up cages and taking care of the cats for adoptions. For the cat adoptions, I first had to set up cages and make sure the cages were filled with food, water, and enough kitty litter before the cats were put in. I helped with the settling of the cats and made sure that they were comfortable. After the cats were put into the cages, I had to clean the other cages were put in before. I personally think that cleaning the cages was the worst part to the community service. I was given time to bond with the cats and play with them as well. Some of the cats were sick and I had to take extra care of them and make sure that nothing was wrong with them. I got the chance to play with the kittens and have fun with them as well so it was also a fun experience.
While doing the community service, I was able to learn new things. For one, I was able to overcome the fear of cats. I learned that cats are also living creatures that need as much love as we do. I also learned that there were many other cats that also need rescuing. By watching the cats for a couple of weeks, I was able to see that they were in need of love and care. All the people who volunteered to help at the cat adoption center were people who really cared for the cats. I was able to learn that there are things in life that I take for granted and that sometimes, I forget to stop and help the beings that really need it. It helped me take more responsibility in my actions and made me be more cautious in my decisions of raising a pet. I learned that pets are not something that you can just throw away when you no longer "want" them. My experience volunteering at Pet Smart will help me grow into a better person and taught me how to respect the environment I live in because there are many other creatures living with me as well.
